General Course Information

This course is a required course for all philosophy majors.  It also satisfies the core curriculum mathematics requirement (in conjunction with a mathematics course).

In this course, we will analyze the difference between good reasoning and bad reasoning and develop formal methods for evaluating deductive arguments.

Upon successful completion of this course, students are expected to

These expected learning outcomes for the course will be assessed through exams, graded homework assignments, non-graded assignments, class discussions and polling the class.

Requirements:

1.  Attendance to lecture/discussion section is mandatory.  If you must miss a class for reasons other than religious observance or illness, please notify me/your TA in advance.

2.  There will be weekly homework assignments and three in-class exams:

Homework (weekly assignments) . . . . . . .     20% of grade

Exam #1 (around week 5*)  . . . . . . . . . . . . .    27% of grade

            Exam #2 (around week 9*) . . . . . . . . . . . . . .   27% of grade

Exam #3 (around week 14*)  . . . . . . . . . . . . .   27% of grade

Final Exam is optional (Wednesday December 13, 7:30 – 10:00 a.m.).  If taken, it will count 25% of the final grade.

Homework assignments will usually be given on Thursdays, due in lecture the following Thursdays, and returned the next week.  These assignments are designed to help you to practice the skills covered in lectures.  They are an essential part of the course since each day’s work builds on the skills and concepts mastered previously.

* The schedule is subject to change and the exact date of exams will be announced in class.

Late Homework and Make-up Exam: Assignment turned in late will not be accepted, and there will be no make-up exam (see 3 in “Important Notes”).

Extra-Credit:  There will no extra-credit for this course.

Important Notes

1. Academic Integrity: Cheating and Plagiarism will not be tolerated in the class.  If a student is found guilty of either, s/he will definitely fail the assignment/test and very possibly the entire class.  If you have doubts about what constitutes cheating or plagiarism talk with me.  If you are found guilty, the fact that you never consulted with me about what constitutes cheating or plagiarism will not be a mitigating factor.  If you are stuck on an assignment, rather than cheat, come to see me.  I’ll help you do your own assignment.

For TTU policy/procedure regarding academic integrity, check the following website:

www.depts.ttu.edu/opmanual/OP34.12.pdf

2. Special Needs: If you have special requirements let me know as soon as possible and I will do my best to work with you to make all necessary arrangements.

Disability status is confidential and should be discussed in private with the instructor once you have done the appropriate AccessTECH verification procedures.  For AccessTECH, check the following website: www.accesstech.dsa.ttu.edu

3. Observance of a Religious Holy Day

You will be excused from attending classes or taking exams, for the observance of a religious holy day.  Although no prior notification of the instructor is required, your advanced notification will be appreciated.

4. Problems or Complaints: If you have problems, complaints or difficulties with any aspect of the class, do not hesitate to talk with me about it.

Working in Groups

I encourage working in groups on the homework.  If you work together with others on the homework, I will add 2 bonus points to your assignment grade up to a maximum of 10 for the semester.   Your group must work in the following way:

            1.  There are no more than 5 members of the group

            2.  Each member of the group works individually on the homework for at least one hour prior to the group’s working together.  (So, if someone shows up not having done any work on the assignment, that’s unacceptable.)

            3.  The group works together for at least one hour.

For a group to get credit on an assignment, each member of the group must sign the following pledge:

In submitting this assignment with my name attached, I hereby certify that I have spent at least one hour of individual time and at least one hour with other members of the group working on the assignment.  I further understand that submitting this homework with my name on it without meeting these requirements constitutes an act of academic dishonesty and makes me liable to disciplinary such as receiving an F on the assignment or flunking the course with the reason of academic dishonesty recorded on my transcript.

I have found that a great many people are helped considerably by talking the material over with other students.

This is not, of course, a requirement; no one is penalized for this.  The grade ranges for the course will not be set on the assumption that people are working together.  So, if you prefer working alone or have a schedule incompatible with engaging in group work, that’s OK.
