The Philosophical Society is
dedicated to the pursuit of truth through an open discussion and
analysis of ideas in the form of public lectures and discussions and
through encouraging students to submit papers at regional philosophical
conferences. It provides important opportunities for anyone interested
in philosophy to gain a broad feel for what is going on in philosophy,
to participate in high-level philosophical discussion, and to interact
with others interested in philosophical
problems. The
Philosophical Society will be meeting in the first floor philosophy
lounge
(where all the couches are located) this Thursday, Nov. 1st
at 5:30 PM. Our discussion theme for the semester will focus on the
philosophy of religion. The reading for next meeting will come from
C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity, Book II- What Christians
Believe. We will focus primarily on the first chapter, "The Rival
Conceptions of God," but feel free to read the entire Book
II. While
reading Lewis' work, critically evaluate the arguments and claims he
makes. For example, how does he tackle the problem of evil? How does he
defend Christianity? Is he successful? Why, or why not? If you have any
questions, please feel free to contact me via email: andrea.nelson@ttu.edu.
